| Summary: | The aim of this article is to understand the activities of intellectuals and cultural and political institutions to protectthe shellmounds of Santa Catarina. Important scientific production on South Atlantic middens took place in the 1940sand 1950s; these archaeological monuments were concomitantly destroyed to use their shell content, causing anirreparable loss for science and future societies. Action and interlocution in the legislative field were fundamentalto guarantee the preservation of shellmounds in the state. Therefore, we will analyze how these interactions arose,taking place between intellectuals, cultural and research organizations and the political area which strive to preservethese shellmounds. |
