The pebbles were evaluated as a secondary lithic raw material source since their lithologies are usually absent in the local archaeological context. Opal and chalcedony are the most abundant lithic material in the studied archaeological sites and they could be of local origin, although no probable lithic source has been found yet. The information presented here is a first approach to the analysis of the potential sources of lithic raw material in Las Chapas, being the major future goal to develop a solid database for the lower-middle area of the Chubut river valley. |

El objetivo del presente trabajo es evaluar la disponibilidad y la distribución de las potenciales fuentes de materias primas líticas identificadas en la localidad arqueológica Las Chapas (Dtos. Gaiman y Mártires, prov. del Chubut), haciendo hincapié en la variabilidad litológica, la dispersión espacial y la aptitud para la talla de las rocas. Los resultados obtenidos indican que existe variada disponibilidad y distribución de materias primas líticas primarias a escala local (basalto, xilópalo y obsidiana), si bien la aptitud para la talla es de regular a mala, con excepción de la toba silicificada. Los rodados –evaluados como materia prima secundaria– presentan litologías que suelen estar ausentes en el contexto arqueológico. Los ópalos y las calcedonias son el material lítico más representado en los sitios arqueológicos estudiados y podrían ser de provisión local, no obstante, no se ha localizado ninguna fuente probable hasta el momento.
