Self in 1956 Ronnie Self (July 5, 1938 – August 28, 1981) was an American rock 'n' roll musician and rockabilly vocalist and performer best known for his 1957 hit single, "Bop-A-Lena," (later covered by Gene Vincent), which was highly popular in the United States and even more so in Australia, after which he spent two years recording some country and gospel songs to limited, regional reception (particularly in the southern United States). Between 1960-64, Self was the lyricist/songwriter of many rock 'n' roll, pop, and country songs that were performed by Brenda Lee and Jerry Reed and Carl Perkins to great success.
