Human populations and environments during the Middle Holocene in the South-Central Andes
Published 2013“…This challenged biotic communities, including humans, who were in the process of effectively occupying the region after initial colonization during the final Pleistocene (see Núñez et al., 2002, 2005; Santoro et al., 2011; Yacobaccio and Morales, 2011; among others) and possibly shifting from conditions where r selective pressures prevailed to others where K selective pressures did (Muñoz and Mondini, 2007, 2008). …”

The pathway of tuberculosis in Argentina: Historical (19th and 20th centuries), epidemiological, and paleopathological data
Published 2021“…Objective: This paper explores the history of TB in Argentina from the pre- Columbian period to recent times in order to evaluate the impact of the industrialization (late 19th and early 20th centuries) on the increasing rates of this disease.Materials: Historical, paleopathological, and current epidemiological data were reviewed. Methods: Data were integrated under a paleopathological approach. Results: Skeletal evidence suggests the existence of TB before colonization. This is followed by two different periods of increasing TB rates: a probable but unconfirmed first stage, related to the contact between Europeans and natives during the 16th-18th centuries, and a second stage during the Industrial Revolution, from the 1880s to the 1950s, when it was finally controlled with the aid of chemotherapies. Conclusions: TB rates increased during industrialization, coincident and probably related to immigration, the disorganized growth of cities, and bad working conditions. …”

Radiocarbon chronology of the early human occupation of Argentina
Published 2013“…In other regions such as the eastern slope of the Andes in Patagonia, the peri-Andean Central West, and the Northwest, where there has been intensive archaeological research for an extended period and there are fewer systematic factors which are likely to bias archaeological visibility, the absence of archaeological evidence of early occupation may indicate delayed colonization of these more marginal environments. The conclusion discusses the implications of 14C dates associated with Fishtail Projectile Points for the western hemisphere pre-Clovis debate, and the implications of terminal Pleistocene/early Holocene dated remains of extinct mammals for the megafaunal overkill hypothesis.…”
