In a previous paper Bellavia! reported a standardized technique for the electrophoretic separation of proteins from human parotid saliva on polyacrylamide gel. A normal pattern with at least 14 bands was described. The method is reproducible and simple enough to make it suitable for clinical studies and analysis of large groups. However, it is necessary to localize and characterize fractions with possible biologic or clinical interest, or both, to take full advantage of the technique. The only band of the pattern clearly recognized in thé earlier work was that of amylase. It is known that albumin, lysozyme, immunoglobulin A (IgA), and other proteins are present in parotid saliva.
