Seguí, Juan Hallé, Pierre WORD-INITIAL PHONEME DETECTION TASK FUNCTIONAL LOCUS MASKED PHONOLOGICAL PRIMING Fil: Manoiloff, Laura M. V. Universidad Nacional de Córdoba. Facultad de Psicología; Argentina. Fil: Hallé, Pierre. Universidad René Descartes; Francia. Fil: Seguí, Juan. Universidad René Descartes; Francia. Using a masked priming cross-form naming paradigm, with visual words as subliminal primes and pictures as targets, Ferrand, Grainger, and Segui (1994) showed that picture naming times were shorter when the target picture is primed by its name, or by a pseudohomophone of its name, than by an unrelated name. The authors proposed that the very brief, masked presentation of the prime activates the corresponding word form representation and facilitates naming when prime equals targets picture name. In the present experiments, we try to determine the functional locus of the effect found by Ferrand et al. (1994). For this purpose, we used a word-initial phoneme detection task on the target picture's name instead of the standard naming task. In this new paradigm, subject's task consists of responding (with a key-press) when the name of the target picture begins with a specified phoneme. For instance: "respond when the name of the presented picture begins by the sound T". Completing this task certainly requires access to the phonological representation of the picture's name but presumably does not engage subsequent articulatory processes. Two experiments were carried out using the masked priming cross-form paradigm with word-initial phoneme detection on target picture. Experiment 1 demonstrates that the prior presentation of the same word prime facilitates the detection of the initial sound of picture name. However, this result may be due to the fact that primes share the initial phoneme of picture name in the same condition but not in the unrelated one (DOG picture preceded by "dog" or "map"). A second experiment was conducted, where same and unrelated primes share the initial phoneme of the picture name (DOG picture preceded by "dog" or "desk"). The obtained results were similar to experiment 1. In both experiments we found faster detection times when the target picture is primed by its name than by an unrelated name, in line with the naming results. Altogether, the data suggest the effects arise at a phonological level of representation. In a further control experiment, we used semantic categorization of target pictures, instead of phoneme detection, and found no facilitation effects. This result is consistent with our proposition that facilitation effects are conveyed by a phonological rather than conceptual level of representation. http://www.sip2013.org/pdf/AnaisCIP-VrsFinal04.pdf Fil: Manoiloff, Laura M.
