description The Family Longidoridae groups together plant-parasitic nematodes, among which species able to transmit phytopathogenic viruses stand out. In Argentina, information on representatives of this Family is still limited. It refers mainly to the distribution and control of a species, a pest on grapevine, and to taxonomic aspects of some known species and some new ones. Based on the information gathered in the analysis of 328 soil samples (from twelve provinces) and existing bibliography, the distribution in Argentina of the above-mentioned Family is inferred. Only two genera are present: Xiphinema (with seven species) and Xiphidorus (with six species, two of them cited for the first time in Argentina). The results of the studies show that even though the diversity of the Family Longidoridae is low in this country, it has widely distributed populations that can be associated with cultivated as well as with non-cultivated plants. Considering the characteristic of certain species of being nematode-borne virus vectors (a feature probably shared with other species), it is necessary to intensify the studies of this Family in order to work out measures to minimize the problems they may eventually cause.

Considering the characteristic of certain species of being nematode-borne virus vectors (a feature probably shared with other species), it is necessary to intensify the studies of this Family in order to work out measures to minimize the problems they may eventually cause.
