Claude Bernard es una de las glorias científicas más grandes y puras de Francia. Ha codificado a la medicina experimental, ha dado autonomía y vigoroso impulso a la Fisiología, y en 20 años ha encontrado más hechos dominadores, no solo que los fisiólogos franceses, que en número escaso trabajaban a su lado, sino que la totalidad de los fisiólogos del mundo entero, al decir de Paul Bert. A través del espacio y del tiempo ha ejercido una profunda influencia sobre todos ellos, y por mi parte lo considero como a uno de mis maestros por el estímulo poderoso que recibió mi vocación al conocer sus obras y sus doctrinas, lo cual explica que tenga por él una admiración devota y profunda.
