The aim of this article is to revisit the 2008 conflict between the countryside and the government based on the interpretation made by the group of Argentine intellectuals Carta Abierta in their first public interventions. Forged in the heat of that conflict, which opened a new period of polarization in Argentine democracy, this group’s interpretation brings into play uses of the concepts of republic and democracy that go back to our transitional theoretical-political tradition, in order to account for a space of experience and a horizon of expectations opened by that critical juncture, which will mark the evolution of Argentine democracy in the following years.
