description | This article will focus on a process that, slowly but persistently, has altered one of the dimensions of the Argentine national political competition. It refers to the «porteñización » of the political elites that compete for high office, especially for the presidency, and to the loss of relevance of provincial governors in the political system. It is a factor little commented on by academic production, but it is a fact that in the years after the constitutional reform of 1994, the candidates for the presidency have had mostly come from the city of Buenos Aires or from their surrounding area, and that being a provincial governor has ceased to be a privileged road to the presidency. At least at the level of the political elites, Argentine politics seems almost inexorably «metropolicized ». |
