Lacan plantea que desde el origen somos objetos dados a ver, sin que esto requiera imaginar un Otro absoluto que nos mire. Porque de suceder eso, se hace presente la mirada de un Omnivoyeur que genera la ilusión en el sujeto de quedar reducido a ser eso que se ve. Lacan aclara que el sujeto del deseo no queda enteramente atrapado en esa captura imaginaria, en tanto es capaz de aislar la función de la pantalla y jugar con ella. El film de Peter Weir The Truman Show es en este sentido una épica del deseo, en tanto narra la historia de un personaje sometido a la mirada de millones de espectadores de un reality show, y cómo logra salir de ese encierro.
