Description
Summary:Recent decades have been marked by the rise of right-wing sectors in democratic go- vernments, in parallel to the crisis of legiti- macy and representation of that system. In Argentina, these processes are linked to the growing use of republicanism in political discourse, as well as its significance in rela- tion to democracy. Starting from this scena- rio, this paper investigates the uses and me- anings of republicanism and its interpreta- tion of democracy in the political discourse of present-day Argentina. To this end, the paper studies the articles in the newspapers La Nación and Clarín in 2019 in which the terms republican/republicanism are used, understanding their relevance in view of the mediatisation of politics and the increased use of such concepts in public debate, parti- cularly in an electoral context in which such discursive disputes are enhanced. Based on the above, the paper presents the redefini- tions of democracy and the link between republicanism and its shortcomings, as well as the political uses of these meanings, from the discursive constructions of right-wing sectors.
