Description
Summary:Are videogames exclusive activities for men? Is game development a purely male job? Based on these and other questions, this article aims to problematize the production and reproduction of gendered meanings in the Argentine videogame industry, considering the development of videogames in the creation phase and consumers’ experience. Starting from a qualitative approach focused on a systematic bibliographical review, we propose that the instances of creation, design, and use of video games are crossed by a strong imperative of masculinity that reproduces an androcentric gaze that supposes a subordinate place for diverse femininities. However, we can affirm that such a prohibitive barrier is not inescapable if we consider subjects’ agency in constructing strategies and interstices to challenge normativity.
