Del conjunto de las observaciones practicadas en estos últimos años, resulta que las glándulas tiroides y paratiroides son órganos entre si bien diferenciados, con una individualidad propia, cuya supresión funcional da lugar a fenómenos específicos. Así se admite que la supresión de la glándula tiroides ocasiona trastornos tardíos de carácter trófico (caquexia estrumipriva); mientras que la supresión de las paratiroides va seguida de fenómenos agudos de índole nerviosa preferentemente convulsivos, (tetania estrumipriva). Para llegar a estas conclusiones han sido necesarias minuciosas investigaciones, que, echando por tierra la hipótesis de Gley de la substitución funcional, conceden a las glándulas paratiroides una importancia funcional especifica, y quizás mayor de la que tiene la tiroides.
