El estudio de las substancias lipoides nos ha abierto recientemente un amplio campo en las investigaciones experimentales de fisiopatología. Su distribuci6n histoquímica en la economía animal ha hecho asignar a los lipoides un rol hipotético de defensa del organismo. Esto es lo que permite deducirse de su presencia preponderante en las membranas celulares, a las que se atribuye indudablemente una función de protección; y de la riqueza que, en dichas substancias, ofrecen órganos como el cerebro, el hígado, la corteza suprarrenal y el ovario, a cuya desintegración histoquímica se deben efectos tan aparentes de intoxicación general del organismo.
