Uno de los motivos por los que el fenómeno de la coagulación de la sangre quedo por largo tiempo oscuro y conserva todavía algunas incógnitas, es el no haberse tenido bastante en cuenta el hecho de que aquel no constituye un proceso único y simple, sino que en el intervienen una serie sucesiva de fases de naturaleza completamente distinta, a través de cuyo recorrido la sangre llega a cumplir con esta especial función defensiva. Una de las menos conocidas entre ellas, es la que inicia la transformación característica de la sangre que tendrá por resultado el cambia de su estado físico. La circunstancia de ser este momento funcional tal vez el mas rápido y de relacionarse probablemente con la función de las plaquetas o hematoblastos, elementos cuya génesis y actividad son un poco conocidas, ha hecho difícil la determinación exacta de su desarrollo.
