We implemented a human eyeblink conditioning procedure that allowed the characterization of their different responses: alpha, voluntary, conditioned, and unconditioned. For this, 8 participants received 66 trials of a tone (conditioned stimulus A +) paired with air-puff in the eye (unconditioned stimulus) and 66 trials of a vibration (conditioned stimulus B-). The results indicated differences in the frequency and temporal topography of the responses. Specifically, the alpha and unconditioned responses exhibited the lowest and highest amplitudes, respectively. In general, the conditioned and voluntary responses are similar in all measured parameters. The frequency analysis showed only evidence of discrimination in conditioned and voluntary responses with a higher response to stimulus A than stimulus B. We discuss the relevance of identifying and distinguishing these responses in any classical conditioning routine.
