Recientemente el comportamiento pro-social se ha convertido en un tema de interés dentro de las ciencias cognitivas. Aunque algunos autores han sugerido que la pro-socialidad es específica de los humanos, hallazgos recientes en ratas sugieren que la pro-socialidad es un fenómeno compartido por diferentes especies de animales. El presente artículo realiza una revisión de las tareas desarrolladas recientemente para evaluar la conducta pro-social en ratas. Asimismo, se discuten críticamente los hallazgos de dichos experimentos con la finalidad de analizar si el mecanismo que subyace a la conducta pro-social en ratas es la empatía.
