Cuando tenía dos meses de edad, su familia se trasladó a San Bernardino (California), en donde su padre, Philip, trabajó primero para la industria de defensa durante los años de la Segunda Guerra Mundial; y luego como trabajador social con la comunidad judía. Su madre, Rose, fue fundamentalmente ama de casa, pero también vendedora de calzados durante los fines de semana. Las personas que más influyeron sobre MP durante su infancia, fueron su padre y su hermano Jerome (JP).
