El aluminio es un producto de la época actual. Sus características de ligereza, de resistencia a la corrosión, la elevada conductividad térmica y eléctrica lo han difundido en las industrias química, eléctrica y mecánica. Aliado con otros elementos, que permiten mejorar sus características mecánicas, ha entrado en la industria aeronáutica. Desde que Wilm estableció en 1911 el '' duraluminio '' y sus tratamientos térmicos, reuniendo a la ligereza la elevada resistencia, el aluminio se transformó en la materia prima más importante para las construcciones aeronáuticas.
