In a word, we must return to the old and permanent humanistic content of the science we profess. |

Para comprender exactamente el problema cuyo estudio he procurado abarcar en el presente trabajo, es necesario volver un momento a puntos de partida pretéritos de la medicina. Se necesita recorrer algunos de los períodos filosóficos, aún los de carácter meramente especulativo de la medicina antigua, tan menospreciados por los médicos modernos, realizar una incursión, siquiera sea breve, por el campo de la historia, ya que, como dice Castiglioni, nadie podrá comprender el presente ni mirar conscientemente el porvenir, si desconoce las fuentes y no sabe investigar las vías a través de las cuales ha penetrado en nosotros el conocimiento de la verdad y como lo ha afirmado Augusto Comte, "ninguna ciencia podrá ser comprendida sin su propia historia, siempre inseparable de la historia general de la humanidad''. En una palabra, deberá volverse al viejo y permanente contenido humanista de la ciencia que profesamos.
