|a ABSTRACT: This thesis in devoted to the study and preliminar appliction of neural engineering for clinical and therapeutical purposes. Neural engineering is an emerging research field, which employs advanced neurophysiological instrumentation (e.g. bioelectronic interfaces, multielectrode arrays, neurostimulation, neuroprostheses) for the acquisition, processing and modulation of biological signals, particularly action potentials. Such processing is based on the theoretical modelling of biological phenomena, by means of an engineering approach, which may be used as an alternative viewpoint to provide new insights on the comprehension of the basic mechanisms underlying the nervous system. The thesis provides an overview on basic principles fundig neurotransmission, which is followed by a bibliographic research reporting the current status of advanced neurophysiological instrumentation. Based on several conceptual and mathematical analogies btween a technological telecommunication system and neurotransmission involving two neural cells, it is possible to provide insights on the comprehension of how information is organized within action potentials, as well as to analyse synaptic plastiticity based on a simple computational modelo
