First record of cyanobacteria microboring activity in pampean shallow lakes of Argentina

Item Description:Bioerosion led bycyanobacteria occurs in terrestrial, freshwater and marine environments anddepends on several ecological and climatic conditions. Therefore, the traces left by these boring organisms can giveadditional information about the paleoenvironment. In the case of freshwaterenvironments of Argentina, the dissolution of mollusk shells has mainly beenattributed to chemical and biological processes. The effect of microbioerosionprocesses in taphonomic lost is still lacking. Mollusk shells corresponding tothe most abundant species (i.e., Heleobiaparchappii and Biomphalaria peregrina)inhabiting in a representative Pampean waterbody (La Brava lake; 37º52?S57º59?W) were studied with the aim of identifying microbioerosion processes.The mollusk specimens collected were specially picked when biofilm cover theshell or dissolution marks were present. Shell surface of some specimens werescrapped removing the biofilm o shells were dissolved with HCl, the biologicalremains were observed under light microscope. Other specimens were treated withsodium hypochlorite 2.5% to remove organic matter and then coated in gold andanalyzed using scanning electronic microscope. Surface pitting and circular toovoid penetrations were observed. Until the moment, the endolithiccyanobacteria found could be identified as belonging to Pseudanabaenaceaefamily. This note corresponds to the first record of microbioerosion borings inshells of H. parchappii in a pampean shallowlake, and also the presence of the trace producing by cyanobacteria. The recordof this endolithic bioerosion trace enhances the discussion of taphonomicprocesses affecting mollusk shells in freshwater settings and may allowadjusting the composition of fossil assemblages and therefore paleoecologicalenvironmental interpretations.
