Summary:In 1987 the World Bank embarked on a major effort to incorporate environmental concerns into all aspects of its work. Progress reports were prepared for the Development Committee in 1987, 1988, and 1989. In 1990 it was decided to initiate a series of annual reports with the purpose of documenting progress and ensuring that the lessons of success and failure are put to good use. This is the third annual report in the series. It sets out the Bank ' s principal environmental activities during fiscal 1992 and its future initiatives, in the context of the findings and recommendations of The World Development Report 1992 and the agreements reached at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (the Earth Summit).
