|a The report evaluates social progress in Peru between 1994-1997, and indicates that, in spite of social welfare improvements during this period, significant inequalities in economic growth, and government programs exist. Furthermore, the distribution of major public investments is reviewed, revealing that, regardless of the government ' s efforts to reach the marginal rural population, only partial measurable benefits have been accounted for, suggesting that extreme variations in regional income still remain. It is interesting to note that, although the gender gap has narrowed, and, some vulnerable groups are sharing the benefits of development, certain groups, namely, the indigenous population, appear to have fallen behind, at the risk of deprivation. Likewise, the social stability for children, remain dubious. Although this report does not recommend how poverty can be eradicated in Peru, it does suggest that, closer ties between economic and social policy makers, would be beneficial, to provide sound technical analyses and advice in policy formulation. An adequate evaluation should follow, to assess program and expenditure changes, and control the adequacy of distribution.
