|a This paper reviews current data on the health of adolescents in developing countries, with a focus on young women. It assesses regional trends in sexual knowledge, contraception, marriage, fertility, and sexually transmitted diseases, including AIDS. Issues of sexual abuse and genital mutilation are examined as well. The paper summarizes program approaches that have been implemented and presents evaluation data. The author identifies promising programs in health education, health and family planning services, multiservice youth centers, outreach programs, and communications. She recommends structural and legal changes for increasing adolescents' access to services and enhancing the quality of services and their relevance for young women.
