Carroll is primarily recognized for his contributions to the philosophy of film, particularly as a proponent of cognitive film theory. In addition to his work in film philosophy, he has published on topics such as journalism, philosophy of art, theory of media, and philosophy of history. Since 2012, he has held the position of distinguished professor of philosophy at the CUNY Graduate Center. In April 2025, he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
